Save the Last Dance is a 2001 American teen dance film produced by MTV Films, directed by Thomas Carter and distributed by Paramount Pictures. (Which is the opposite of a boss-ass one.) This is actually Derek and Chenille’s movie. A white midwestern girl moves to Chicago, where her new boyfriend is a black teen from the South Side with a rough, semi-criminal past. In the movie, Julia Stiles’ character Sara Johnson does an audition dance which has since the movie's release become a meme. Sara (Julia Stiles) wants to be a ballerina, but her dreams are cut short by the sudden death of her mother. Especially since this movie isn’t about them “changing” her, it’s about them telling her stop being a baby-bitch. The film stars Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas, two high schoolers who meet. Yet she seems scared and confused when she hears it.Īrguably, this movie is less about Sara than it is Derek and Chenille’s patience with her. I mean, Ice Cube’s “You Can Do It” has been played at middle-school dances. 5 7 (1. She also acts like she has never even danced to hip-hop- despite, again, it being a mainstream genre since the late 1980s. Music she has seemingly never heard before despite the year being 2001, and it being everywhere. Even her audition music is something introduced to her by Chenille and Chenille’s brother, Derek: hip-hop. ![]() Aside from being a ballet dancer, she has no discernable qualities that make her stand out from anybody. Her style in the movie is just as baffling: we know that Sara experiences a makeover at the hands of Kerry Washington’s character Chenille, but aside from that, her fashion is bland. ![]()
